A Week or So

A Week or So

Hello, I have had fine week-or-so. A very fine week-or-so indeed. I spent much of Halloween night with my son, knocking door-to-door in our eerily suburban neighbourhood.  The streets were almost shoulder-to-shoulder with squirming humans — kids, grownups in tow. We are relatively new to the neighbourhood and everywhere else we have lived in town, Halloween has been deadly sparse. Now I realize why; all of the kids come to the ‘burbs — to our street, specifically. There were hundreds of clamouring ones — little and large....

Yukon Gold

Not long ago I came home from an astounding 10 day adventure in the Yukon. I was there musiculating with some of my favorite folks. Mathias Kom (The Burning Hell) originally suggested I make the trip and I’m glad that I did. He, you see, has a hand in Headless Owl — a newish record label based out of Whitehorse. The folks at HO and Halifax-based You’ve Changed thought it would be a good idea to invite a whole bunch of their favourite musicians up for ten days to collaborate, to record an album and to perform songs in...

Home Town Metal Heart

Home Town Metal Heart

Hello, Recently I went on an errand to pick up some large pieces of metal from my home town. While I travel a lot, I only pass through Caledonia once a year at most. Sometimes I feel pangs of guilt about how infrequently I visit; other times I feel strangely smug at having escaped, which is ridiculous, since I only live 15 minutes away and often fantasize about one-day buying back my childhood home. In my youth I had a reoccurring dream in which I would return as an adult to find the buildings taller, brighter and eerily unpopulated. Different...

Hey… You. Get into my car.

Posted by on 10:38 pm in Blog | Comments Off on Hey… You. Get into my car.

Hello there, I bought a car somewhat unexpectedly! It’s a medium-old, shiny black wonderbeast — lightly used, but new to me. It was a bit of an unexpected move on my part. I felt quite liberated and clever riding the bus and mooching rides from place to place for the past couple of years… but then Heather and I moved far from town. And then someone made me an offer I couldn’t refuse. So I’ve quickly grown quite reliant on my shiny wastemobile. Already I feel its tendrils encircling my limbs –sinking into me....

Angry Trains

Posted by on 11:08 pm in Blog | Comments Off on Angry Trains

My son has a wooden train set. It’s a mishmash of those generic, nondescript wooden trains and track pieces that you get from department stores, and the fancy Thomas the Tank Engine pieces bought second-hand. Recently Heather got him a special table with trees, lakes and mountains painted on it where he can set up his tracks and play with them. He loves the table and he loves his trains, in theory. The Thomas cars fit nicely on the generic tracks, and connect perfectly to the plain wooden train cars with their shiny little magnets. The...

The rest of Europe and a Strange New Home

Posted by on 12:12 am in Blog | Comments Off on The rest of Europe and a Strange New Home

I’m back home now. I have been for a bit. I am lying on the basement floor of my confounding new suburban home. The rain is coming down now. I meant to write sooner, but the move has been such a whirly-wind. Let me see what I can remember. I explained my time in Hannover with my friend and tour manager Vincent. Well, as Vincent a continued to drive all about Germany and Switzerland, visiting tiny castles, galleries and pubs. On our way to Munchen (or Munich if you prefer the English bastardization), Vincent insisted that we drive the...

Everything I can remember so far

Posted by on 6:57 pm in Blog | Comments Off on Everything I can remember so far

Hello, I will do my best to remember a lot of the things that have happened to me on my tour in Germany (and Switzerland) so far. I told you about how I played a show in Saarbruken, then took a nap in Trier. Well, after that I road a train to Mainz. Mainz a neat town where the printing press was invented. My friend Christoph met me at the hauptbanhoff and drove me to his lovely little bar called Hafeneck. The word ‘Hafeneck’ doesn’t really mean anything as far as I know, even in German, but you can get away with making up...

Naps in Trier

Did you visit the ‘shop’ page and get some music? If so, thanks.  An Extra Special goes out to those who shot me something with paypal.  The response has been humbling. It’s on for a while yet,  so spread the word to people who like weird folk songs and scrappy, self-aggrandizing bastards. Right now I’m resting on a high-end pullout sofa in Trier thinking of the finer things.  I’m thinking of the countless brilliant people have helped me long the way.  Whether we’ve shared a quick conversation,  an...

New site. Free Music. Europe Record Launch. Europe Tour.

Posted by on 9:43 pm in Blog | Comments Off on New site. Free Music. Europe Record Launch. Europe Tour.

I’m pretty excited about a few things: firstly, I have a new website.  This is it.  Simi made it.  She’s an all-round remarkable person; secondly, my recent record No Safe Home has just been released throughout Europe on Artfull Sounds/Cargo Distribution;  thirdularly, I’m in Germany right now,  touring in support of the record. I’m pretty dizzy,  exhausted and happy that I get to do this.  To celebrate these three neat things, I have decided to give away all of my available back-catalog of music for free or...

Luxembourg and Saarbruken

Luxembourg and Saarbruken

I’m having a very nice time in Europe now.  I arrived on Friday evening after being bounced around flights and airports like a donkey.  I Landed in Luxembourg,  took a bus past the big EU buildings and another all the way to Saarbruken.  I performed at a community run theatre and music complex called Sparte4. Christoph set up a wireless mic for me so I got to sing ‘Build Me Up Buttercup’  real close to all the Germany faces.  There was ample dancing and drinking by the end in spite of all the bean-bag chairs.  Thank...
